Wilson Pits is a hidden trail that starts behind the shops at Rushden Lakes. It's ideal for a walk, bike ride or even a picnic! Following our great day out yesterday at Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadow Reserve we headed to the opposite end of the trail which starts at Rushden Lakes and is called Wilson Pits Nature Reserve (see map at bottom of post).

Travel and park and Rushden Lakes. Try to park at the top carpark outside Hobbycraft, Wren, and AJ Cycles. To access the trail you need to walk around the back of these shops to the area known as East Terrace.

the path…

The path is pram friendly, wide, and great for cyclists. There is very little shade though so don’t forget your hat!

the routes…

At the start of the trail is a sign letting you know the direction and how far the local towns are. You are 2 miles from Irthlingborough and 2 1/4 miles from Stanwick Lakes visitor centre.

how to get to Wilson Pits…

To get to Wilson Pits you need to veer off the main track. Not long after you start you will clearly see a gate on your right and it is also signposted so you can’t miss it.

Wilson Pits…

Once you go through the main gate you can choose between two directions to follow that join up to create one big loop. We chose the one straight ahead as it seemed more pram friendly and we also came back this way so I’m not too sure what the other half is like (please comment below if you do!). This one also has a Bird Hide that looks out over the lake.

As this area is very shaded by the trees and runs right alongside the lake, the path is a track that has been worn away into the grass rather than graveled like the main one. I was still able to push the pram along here easily, minding a few raised tree roots.

After about 10 minutes there are some steps that go down to a bridge – this was tricky with the pram and I had to get Hudson out of it to get down it as there are steps again straight after. This then leads to Wilson Pits which is a larger area.

There were some great views here but it became increasingly difficult with the pram – the ground was very uneven, there was a lot of horse poo and some really sharp thorns. So after a moment to rest we headed back in the direction we came.

a little more to discover…

Once we got back to the gate and the main track we found we still had some time so headed further along in the direction of Irthlingborough. There was a large bridge with some more beautiful views up the river and some grassy areas and trees on the sides of the path that are ideal for a rest in the sun or a picnic.

conclusion…

This was a great walk with kids or to enjoy with a friend. As mentioned it’s ideal for a bike ride, picnic, or could be tied in perfectly with a meal at one of Rushden Lakes many restaurants such as my favourite, Bills Restaurant!

Have you been for any of the walks around Rushden Lakes? Which is your favourite?
