This year is flying by, lockdown made many feel that they had 3-4 months stolen for them. What upset me most was the amount of School the boys missed. It’s hard to believe that we are now at the end of the School Year and will soon be getting ready for the new one!
It was this time last year that I was getting Flinn ready for starting school and although he was my second to start, it was still as daunting for me.
I bought him a number of books for starting school and thought I would list our favourites here to help any other children that are starting this year.
Our top books for starting school…
Harry and the Dinosaurs Go To School.
This is a beautiful story about a little boy who is afraid of going to school so takes with him his bucket of dinosaurs, one of which is also very nervous. The story takes you through Harry’s first day and some obstacles he faces. There is another boy in Harry’s class who is also struggling on his first day but after Harry reaches out to him they end up bonding over Harrys’ dinosaurs.
Usborne Starting School Sticker Book
This was gifted to Flinn a few months before he started school. It’s a great way to talk about what they can expect when they start without having to read a book. The book covers getting ready for school, what they might need to take with them, what to do when they get there, the classroom, playtime, learning, and home time. This can be used as just a fun activity or a great way to start a conversation without being too direct.
I am Too Absolutely Small For School (featuring Charlie and Lola)
This is a really fun story and perfect for any kids that already love Charlie and Lola. The story tells of Lola worries and concerns about school and what the expectations of her might be while big brother Charlie reassures her and explains to her why it is so important the she goes. In the end Lola realises that she must go to school to support her imaginary friend that will also be there.
Other popular books for starting school…
This book is fun and humorous and talks about the whole first term of school rather than just the first day.
Get ready for school first words sticker book
Rather than talking about the first day of school, this book helps your child with their reading and writing of simple words.
