walking…

Unlike some of the other local country parks, Irchesters trails are mainly woodland. It is a great spot for a family day out as there are 3 trails of different lengths. The first is a 1/2 mile, fully surfaced trail that will take around 15 minutes and starts/ finishes at the quarry play area.

The second is a 1 1/3 mile trail that keeps you inside the central woodland area. Most of it is surfaced although part of it goes through a grassed meadow area and there are also some steps. This trail will take you approximately 45 minutes.

The last trail is 2 1/2 miles, will take you approximately 1 1/2 hours, and is again largely woodland based. There is another meadow that you will need to walk through that takes you past the railway museum. Following this trail will take you past some large dinosaur bones and to the Dragline viewpoint plus provide some information about the history of the park.

For some added fun, if following this trail you can have a go at the online quiz which informs and tests you on your knowledge of the heritage of the park! You can access the quiz here.

play area…

On top of the den building area and the dinosaur bones, there is a great play area at Irchester country park. The quarry play area offers equipment for kids of all ages, including a large sandpit so don’t forget your sand toys.

The play area is just alongside the cafe and there are a number of picnic benches around them.

parking…

There is plenty of parking located at both the top and bottom of the park, depending on the trail you want to do. As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, there are fees for parking. The upper carpark is open all day every day and the lower varies per time of year. Make sure you do make a note of what time it closes as they are strict on this and will lock it without warning, trust me, I have been locked in myself! There is a charge to be let out if you do get locked in.

toilets…

There are fully accessible toilets available at Irchester country park. They are open every day except Christmas day and have various opening times.
